Founded in Santa Barbara by Julia and Todd, the company began as a humble operation on the corner of State Street and Figueroa using an espresso machine loaned by friends at Verve Coffee. Central to Dune's philosophy is their "Somos Socios" (We Are Partners) approach, emphasizing sustainable partnerships across the global coffee supply chain. The company commits to working exclusively with partners invested in coffee's long-term success, ensuring producers receive fair and sustainable prices. These enduring relationships enable Dune to serve exceptional coffees consistently year after year while allowing producing partners to depend on reliable support for improvements and risk-taking. Dune views relationships with customers, coworkers, and producing partners as equally important, fostering a community where collective success is the goal. Through coffee, the company creates positive impact both globally and within their Santa Barbara hometown, believing specialty coffee should be accessible, approachable, and enjoyable for everyone. After beginning roasting their own coffee in 2012 with a full-scale roastery alongside their second Anacapa Street location, Dune expanded to Goleta in 2015 and opened their fourth retail location on Calle Real in 2022, despite pandemic-related delays.
