Moxie Coffee Co. is a Phoenix-based micro roastery and bakery founded in 2021 by Matt Heltzel, built around a clear fascination with what the team calls “uncommon” coffee. Heltzel’s path into roasting began long before the café opened—starting with small-scale experimentation in 2011—and eventually evolved into a focused pursuit of rare, expressive coffees that challenge expectations and reward curiosity. Phoenix became the home for this vision, grounding a globally minded sourcing approach in a deeply local community. Moxie centers its work on sourcing distinctive, often limited coffees from producers experimenting with novel processing and fermentation methods. These coffees are roasted relatively light, with the intention of preserving brightness, sweetness, and clarity while allowing each origin’s character to remain intact. The roasting philosophy emphasizes collaboration with producers, treating roasting as a continuation of the work done at origin rather than a tool to overwrite it. This approach has earned national recognition, including a Gold award at the 2025 Global Coffee Awards for a Colombian Geisha produced by Letty Bermudez—placing Moxie among the most closely watched emerging roasters in the U.S. Beyond accolades, the roastery is equally defined by its community presence. Regular parking lot gatherings transform the space into a hub for food, art, and local makers, reinforcing Moxie’s belief that coffee is as much about connection as it is about flavor. Through rare coffees, careful roasting, and intentional community building, Moxie Coffee Co. has established itself as a distinctive voice in modern specialty coffee—rooted in Phoenix, but outward-looking in ambition.
